It’s Time for Medicare to Pay for Compression Garments – Support the Lymphedema Treatment Act
Although the Lymphedema Treatment Act was first introduced into Congress back in 2010, it has not yet been passed. This act would provide Medicare coverage for compression garments. Currently, Medicare does not cover compression garments which are an essential part of treatment and management of lymphedema.
Update on Exercise and Lymphedema Management
We have received many inquiries and comments about our 2021 blog on weightlifting and lymphedema. Since the 2009 New York Times article we referenced, research continues to highlight the importance of exercise as an essential part of lymphedema management. There is also consensus with major national organizations (National Lymphedema Network, National Comprehensive Cancer Network, American Cancer Society, American College of Sports Medicine) with updated exercise guidelines that breast cancer survivors should incorporate aerobic and flexibility activities and that strength training is safe. It is important that survivors are cleared for exercise and that they are performed in a supervised program.
Compression Garments
While we see a generation of consumers using lycra shapewear to reshape bodies, flatten bulges, lift sags etc., we know that the compression garments recommended by lymphedema therapists are for a far more important purpose, and can be an essential component to treating and managing lymphedema. Our therapeutic goal is using them is to help limit lymph fluid buildup and also provide support to muscles to help pump fluid out of affected body parts.
Weight Lifting May Help to Avert Lymph Problems
This article focuses on a gradual return to activity and exercise for those with lymphedema. A gradual return is important for lymphedema patients because the lymphatic system is a fragile, slow, and sluggish. We believe a gradual return is important for all patients, not just those with lymphedema. Too much exercise or stress can be overwhelming and shock the lymphatic system for anyone recovering from surgery that may impact the lymphatic system.
